LJ FB: Some of the old, some of the new

By Ed Piper

Another close encounter with "Juice" revealed the following:

--Viking lineman Jett Thomas was named All-CIF First Team. We knew this.

--La Jolla safety Ryan Kestler, who had a great season, was named to PPR's "51" (apparently related to KUSI's station number being Channel 9/51). "Juice", whose given name is Scott Hughley, the Associate Head Coach for La Jolla, said that's pretty exclusive territory.

Only 51 players are named to the group, and can include any class--seniors, juniors, what have you.

--Additionally, safety/wide receiver Carson Diehl received a visit from Sean Lewis, the head coach for San Diego State. Diehl, who was injured a lot of the 2024 season as a junior, had an incredible sophomore year in 2023, snagging nine interceptions to lead the county.

Carson once told me he has a vertical leap in excess of 30 inches--33 or so. That's a lot.

--Quarterback Hudson Smith fits nicely into the pattern of his predecessor: Jackson Diehl got his feet wet during his junior season, then, with his feet settled, took off in his senior year.

"Juice" sees the same pattern evolving with Smith--a junior year with its good and bad, a senior year promising to be one in which Huddy will already have encountered the different challenges one in his spot as head of the offense has to face, and moves to a higher plane from there.
