Opening holes for running back Max Smith, as well as protecting quarterback Jackson Stratton, La Jolla's entire offensive line received All-Eastern League honors, announced at the team's end-of-season dinner Jan. 12.
Nicknamed "Highway 5" for their route-opening skills, Cyrus Varnum, Devin Garcia, Johnny Griffen, Davin St. John, and Isaac Ramirez were named All-League for the 2019 campaign, which resulted in an Eastern League championship, CIF Division 3 title, and Southern California championship.
Varnum, a senior 6'4", 250-pound right tackle, was named First Team All-Eastern League. Garcia, Griffen, St. John, and Ramirez were slotted into the Second Team.
"I'll tell you a funny story about Cyrus," said Head Coach Tyler Roach as he made the announcement. "He's a big guy. He had never played football before. When he first tried to get into a three-point stance, he could hardly do it.
"(Over time) he progressed to the point of being our starting right tackle, all-league, and now with an opportunity to play football in college."
