Junior Monica O'Brien Saez, La Jolla's top cross country runner, finished second over the 3.11-mile course at Morley Field in the Western League Cluster in a time of 19:33 Thurs., Nov. 7.
Her time trailed only that of Trang Wooldridge of Cathedral Catholic, who covered the uneven route over grass, loose dirt, and concrete in 18:52. The differential was 41 seconds.
"Monica ran a good race. She finally broke out," said Viking head coach Mandy Benham as she hurried to check in on her JV boys, whose race followed the varsity girls race.
O'Brien has been the lead runner for La Jolla's varsity girls since her sophomore year.
Shortly before the race, covering a winding, 3.11-mile double-circuit over hill, over dale in the Balboa Park athletic complex, the runner said when asked what she thinks about before a competition, "Relaxing, and who I need to pass. Partly strategy."
"Do you do a read on how your body is feeling?" she was asked.
"Yes. I feel good right now," she said, appearing to be very calm and relaxed, smiling in the short exchange with a reporter.
