On Mon., Nov. 11, Coach Darice Carnaje carried on tryouts for her La Jolla High girls basketball program, during the Veterans Day Holiday.
Helping her were long-time coaches Bob Allen and Bill Bush.
Fifty-two girls were competing in different groups around the Big Gym on the school campus.
When a reporter told Carnaje he counted the 52 participants, the veteran coach said, "There are more girls not here who are still playing fall sports."
Then, he said, "Wow, this is a busy day. You have CIF girls tennis playoffs, too."
She: "I love it."
Carnaje, who moved from Our Lady of Peace four years ago, then took the varsity hopefuls outside to run stadiums and tracks. "You have to run two laps. It's for time," she explained to the 20 or so assembled on the all-weather surface in front of the weight room.
It was 2 p.m. in the afternoon, and yes, the weather was sunny. One basketballer said, "I'm already sweating and I haven't even run yet."
Among the returning players present at Monday's tryouts was junior Caroline Palmer, a 5'7" guard/forward who last year showed good court sense and a lot of aggressiveness. She has a sense for where the ball is going to be, and she goes and gets it--something that coaches like Carnaje like.
Palmer was in Carnaje's rotation in 2018-2019. Another returning varsity player is Zoe Guidry, a 5'6" guard who is a sprinter for the Viking track team in the spring.
