Santa Fe Christian, La Jolla's opponent in week three of the season, presents running back Stephen Britton and a bruising ground game that is going to grind out two and three yards at a time.
"We're not going to get into that. We're going to open things up," said Viking head coach Tyler Roach in an early morning phone conversation Fri., Sept. 6. "We're going to extend the field."
"We have some receivers who can get over the top in our vertical game," continued the third-year pilot. "(Quarterback) Jackson (Stratton) has that live arm that can deliver to them."
Elaborating on Britton, Roach said, "He's a Max Smith-Jack Wiese type. Physical. They brought him up when he was a freshman. Last year (as a sophomore) he played defense (too). This year he is only playing running back.
"They graduated the quarterback they had before. That's why I think (Santa Fe Christian) simplified the offense."
Tonight is Staff Appreciation Night. Players selected a teacher or other staff member as their supporter who will be recognized along with them at halftime.
In addition, ASB is organizing a "Red Out" for students. "We'll be wearing our red uniforms," said Roach.
As far as student support, he said, "In my three years as head coach and three as an assistant, these are two of the biggest crowds we've ever had," he said of the Vikings' first two games. "It's been a great support. Hopefully, that will continue tonight."
