In La Jolla's season opener at home, the Vikings held a somewhat-comfortable 8-4 at halftime over Mar Vista.
However, you wouldn't have known it from Viking head coach Tom Atwell's demeanor. Toward the entrance of the Coggan Family Pool Complex, the veteran coach of the number-seven-ranked team in the county, his team grouped around him, had some specific things he wanted his players to receive. These could be heard from a distance away--like, "Have some pride."
Soon after, with the resumption of play in the third quarter, Alex Brown, Crusoe Frapwell, and Gavin Olson scored in rapid succession to give the hosts a dominating 11-4 lead. Mar Vista, a little shell-shocked, finally netted a goal, but it was too little, too late.
The skill of the Vikings had come out, and the game was no longer a contest.
Late in the third period, on Ryan Sterzenbach's goal, La Jolla built a 14-5 advantage.
With three minutes left in the final quarter, Atwell cleared his bench. The final outcome: 14-8.
La Jolla is no longer a one-man offensive show, with high school All-American Cole Atwell having graduated to play at Brown University, along with his older sister Lexie. In the early going, Frapwell and Alex Sterzenbach contributed goals in building a 3-1 first period lead.
