The La Jolla High cross country teams are meeting at four different venues this week to begin fall workouts: Mon., Aug. 5, DeAnza Cove Park; Tuesday, Fanuel Park in Pacific Beach; Wednesday on the track at LJHS; Thursday, Kate Sessions Park; Friday, back at DeAnza Cove.
Why? "To get them on different surfaces," said head coach Mandy Benham during morning practice Wed., Aug. 7. "We have mostly only one surface around here, concrete. So it gives them a change."
Continuing, she said, "Also, to change it up for them. It gives (the runners) different places to run.
"To change it up for me, too. I want that. During the season, we're going to be running (in practice) on the same routes (so it can get monotonous)."
Meanwhile, she and assistant coach Joni LeSage ran the 30 or so student athletes through group drills in lines designed to improve running form. The drills up-and-back to the 50-yard line on the football turf, from the eastern end zone, probably helped with spring, as well.
