Before a packed house at Mission Bay High Friday night, Dec. 14, the host Buccaneers and their star guard, Boogie Ellis, shined bright but in the end met a superior force, visiting Rancho Christian, succumbing to a 75-70 defeat.
The crowd, made up of a strong representation of Mission Bay students supporting their team, was also drawn by the match-up with the Mobley brothers, Isaiah, a 6'10" senior, and Evan, a 7-foot junior.
Isaiah, who is ranked by ESPN as the 15th best player in his class nationally, exerted his will in the first half, blocking numerous shots and recording several slam dunks to delight the crowd, which stretched against the wall along both baselines in the small Buc gym.
In the second half, Evan, ranked as the number-one player in his class in the nation, took more authority and made things tough for Mission Bay's 6'7" Ronnie Latting, who was a non-factor and fouled out in the second half.
The elite team pairing, arranged by Mission Bay coach Marshawn Cherry, saw the Bucs surge to an 11-4 lead in the early going before the Eagles could get moving.
Later, the locals managed leads of 27-23 in the second period and 57-51 in the third. Lefty Jaymarree Norton's outside shooting complemented the quickness of Ellis, the reigning San Diego CIF Player of the Year, who showed he is all he is cracked up to be as a Duke commit.
But a seesaw second half saw the Mobley brothers, with plenty of help, tie the game at 65-all with five minutes left, then maintain the lead down the stretch.
Ellis, a 6'2" shooting guard, finished with 19 points. Latting had 10.
Isaiah Mobley scored 14 points. Evan Mobley had 12, all in the second half.
Rancho Christian is ranked number two in the state by MaxPreps.
