The rain held off just long enough for La Jolla's Mia Tomasulo to score in the 20th minute of the second half and Charlie Davey to provide an insurance goal 12 minutes later, as the Vikings blanked Steele Canyon 2-0 in a Butch Lee Soccer Tournament game at Westview High Thursday afternoon.
First-year coach Trent Painter's squad, looking disciplined and interconnected, followed up on a good effort in pouring rain and driving wind the day before on the same field, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
La Jolla had the earlier (3:30 game) both days, so Thursday that meant warmer temperatures than in the later game of the tournament doubleheader of the annual tourney.
Midfielder Allegra Bark, with her trademark red hair, was smart in moving the ball to the Vikings' forwards, Chloe Alexander and Charlie Davey, among others. Davey, racing up the sideline on various attacks, showed her speed and athleticism, resulting in the goal late in the abbreviated (35-minute) second half (an agreement between coaches due to the urgency of starting the second game near 5 p.m.).
Starting goalie Trinity Schulz, who played the first half, wasn't tested. Painter placed Angela Buendia in the keeper's spot in the second half.
