Elliot Austin, La Jolla's intense 132-pound wrestler, not only won his weight division at the 30th Annual Marauder Invitational Dec. 9, but he was also named the Outstanding Wrestler for the lighter weight classes in the event.
"He was incredible in the match in the finals," said Viking head coach Kellen Delaney of the 17-year-old senior's pin of Jordan Bendorf of Bonita Vista. The pin, Austin's fourth in a row in the annual tourney, came in 5:30--in other words, with two and half minutes gone in the second period. (Each period lasts three minutes. The wrestlers go three periods, if a pin does not occur before then.)
"I don't remember one of our wrestlers receiving the trophy for Outstanding Wrestler," said a proud Delaney, who shepherded five other Viking wrestlers through the tourney as well.
"Everyone but one wrestler won at least one match," said the coach, surveying the development of his program.
Austin and Christophe Naviaux, who won the consolation bracket title at 170 pounds after losing his first match of the day at Mira Mesa, both return to competition Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15-16, at San Ysidro High in the El Cajon Valley Invitational Tournament. Junior varsity wrestlers will compete Saturday only at Helix High.
