La Jolla will play for the Hilltop Invitational championship against Otay Ranch Friday night, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings won three of their four games in the tournament to get this far, including a clutch 43-36 win over Eastlake Dec. 6 to get the nod.
Before Wednesday evening's decider, host coach Luke Kelley, the head coach at Hilltop High, talked about how a tie-breaker would be decided for the title game. Otay Ranch was already into the championship by virtue of its win earlier that day.
If La Jolla went on to win its 7:30 game that night, it would earn a place in the finals. It did so.
If the Vikings had lost, they would have fallen into a three-way tie, with RBV and Eastlake, all with 2-2 records. Kelley said he sent out an email Wednesday clarifying to coaches how such a tie would be broken: Rather than win differential, the criteria for the Hilltop Invitational is points allowed to the other teams in the tie-breaker.
"That will take some math," said Kelley, implying he wouldn't know immediately at the conclusion of the La Jolla-Eastlake--if La Jolla had lost to the Titans--who would win the tie-breaker.
By virtue of the win, however, Coach Paul Baranowski's team avoided Kelley's getting a headache over "some math", and went straight to the title match, collect $200, do not pass go.
