"Demitri Washington is at running back--you won't miss him. He's a big one," said Jon Wallace, Santa Fe Christian's head football coach, spotlighting key players for the Eagles before their tilt at La Jolla Sept. 15.
Washington, a senior, runs 6'4", 235 pounds. Santa Fe wants him to run a little wild, because Wallace's squad is coming off two straight losses to start the season, then a bye week.
How will Wallace's players react to having the previous week off? "That's a good question," he said. "That's hard to tell. But bye week came at a good time for us, with illness and the losses. It's always a little bit of a challenge having a bye week early in the season."
"We run with, like, 18 receivers," said the head coach at the religious institution, only partly joking. Throwing to them will be junior quarterback Michael Linguadoca. "He's a good one," remarked Wallace.
"We have some good lineman. Joe Burich is a corner. He also lines up at the position as Demitri at running back."
In week one, the Eagles lost in double overtime at Olympian, 41-38. Then, in week two, Santa Fe Christian traveled the short distance to Torrey Pines and lost there, 35-17. Torrey Pines is ranked sixth in this week's CIF poll.
In two games, running back Jack Miles has rushed 33 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Linguadoca, at quarterback, is second on the team with 22 carries for 133 yards and one TD. Washington is third with 14 carries for 60 yards and no TD's.
The Eagle QB has completed 12 passes in 23 attempts for 266 yards in the air to go with his ground yardage. He has two TD's and no interceptions. His QB rating, despite the two losses, is an excellent 122.7.
On defense, the big Washington already has 29 tackles, including 16 against the highly-ranked Torrey Pines Falcons. He also has two sacks.
Luke Sanders, a senior like Demitri, has 19 tackles.
