"This sure would be a good year to go out," said Kristin Jones, 13-year coach of La Jolla's girls soccer team, prior to the Vikings' 1-0 win over Oceanside in the CIF Divison 2 playoffs.
"We beat Cathedral. There have been a lot of highlights."
Due to UCSD's ascension to Divison 1, "Jonesy", as she is popularly known, must transition out of her long-time successful position coaching at La Jolla. "Next year would the last year," if she is even allowed to return to coach at La Jolla after this season.
The Vikings have enjoyed a good run under Jones over the past decade-plus. In her case, 13 is a lucky number.
Talking about her team's 1-0 win over Bishop's in the quarterfinals, Jones reminisced that Brian Quinn, her counterpart for the Knights, came in about the same time. Quinn is a former star on the San Diego Sockers professional team. Jones starred for UCSD, where she is presently associate head coach and heir apparent to the head job.
La Jolla's win over the Pirates places them in the CIF title game, where the Vikings have been before under Jones.
