The turnout was lower than the previous three days, but the attentiveness to detail and the energy was still evident as La Jolla High's football team hopefuls worked out at Muirlands Middle School on day four of late spring practice Fri., June 3.
New head coach Matt Morrison, who had a waning "teaching voice" after four days of being in his elementary school classroom as well as running his first week of practice, noted the diminished numbers in talking to his players. He encouraged them to hold one another accountable to get to practice, in addition to any role the coaches would play.
Spring practice went apace, despite a group organizing a cancer walk for the following day needing to set up on parts of the Muirlands Middle School field.
Several players arrived in advance of the official 4:30 start to workouts. Some threw a football, others a tennis ball. Some bantered about the previous day's practice, but most, though appearing relaxed and eager for workouts, kept on the quiet side.
There is anticipation for the new facilities down the hill on the high school campus. Right now, as they have for the past year, coaches and team members hold drills alongside metal containers stored next to the Muirlands field that hold equipment and other necessaries for the program.
All of that will be a thing of the past when the squad moves into its new team room next to the Edwards Stadium field, projected to be in mid-August. The Vikings' season-opening game comes Fri., Aug. 26, at Montgomery High in the South Bay. Then the home opener on the new playing surface follows Fri., Sept. 2, to begin the Labor Day Weekend.
The school year starts early this coming fall, coming a week earlier than the traditional post-Labor Day start.
