Asked for an unofficial date when the La Jolla High football team can expect to move into their new facilities in Edwards Stadium, first-year coach Matt Morrison said mid-August is the goal.
Talking during the Vikings' second day of spring practice--drills set back to the first three weeks in June by the resignation of previous coach Jason Carter after the turn of the year and Morrison's hiring over a month later--Morrison said the opening of the new team room and other facilities will be "huge" in impact on the football program.
"It will save time, instead of us having to get equipment up here (the present practice field at Muirlands Middle School).
"It will help make the program more visible on campus, which will advertise it and help draw more players," continued Morrison.
"These guys (looking over at his returning players) have been through hell the last year, in playing all their games on the road. I come in and benefit from the new facilities," he said, smiling.
"It's going to help draw more players to the school, with the enhanced facilities," including a new weight room, team room, coaches' offices, and new surface on the football field, as well as the track.
Meanwhile, about 30 juniors, sophomores, and freshmen went through "indy" (independent) drills and team drills alternately. One assistant coach who is new to the program said he was in only his second day of meeting and working with the players, whose names he must learn from scratch. The previous day, during practice, he asked a student his name as he did instruction.
