Tanner Watson is first in drills, ready to get his reps. "First off the line," said Watson when this observation was shared with him. He's alert, positive, ready to take advantage of all spring practice for the La Jolla High football team has to offer him.

Tino Mendez, a lineman, continues to rehab on the sidelines each day from ACL surgery last winter. He's early to workouts, and shows enthusiasm for the sport in conversations.

Alex Scrivener, with his trimmed beard, looks like a Norseman heading out on a mission. "English," he said, regarding the derivation of his last name.

What does a new head coach think on day three of spring practice?

"Day one was slow," said Matt Morrison, head coach, after two practices. "It had to be. We're introducing a lot of things. We want it to go slow" so that players can absorb what is being taught.

"Day two, they were remembering things we had introduced the day before. That raised my expectations."

Christophe Gish, returning starting center, asserted that, yes, despite other spellings in program publicity last season, his first name does end with an "e". Only a reporter who is an English teacher would worry about that.

Gish is working out with Dane Hansen to his left, other rising seniors around him, in daily drills.

Linebacker/offensive lineman Daniel McColl is also taking snaps as a running back. Morrison has the practice scheduled to the minute, alternating "indy" (independent) work with linemen, receivers, quarterbacks, and others in individual positions working with different coaches, and group drills.
