La Jolla was on fumes by the time the girls volleyball team staggered to a victory in the shortened fifth game, to win 3-2 at University City Wednesday (Oct. 16).
The Vikings won the first two games of the match, but then gave up two straight wins to the crosstown rival Centurions and at 2-2 was facing defeat. Energy seemed very low, in stark contrast to matches in which the girls really pump it up.
"I saw our team play well when we passed the ball, and struggle when we didn't," said La Jolla coach David Jones after the win. "It really comes down to that. Offensively, we've got lots of weapons. We've got some heighth defensively. But it really all comes down to serve receipt, the most basic fundamental of the game."
La Jolla evens its league record at 2-2, 12-9 overall, and next faces Scripps Ranch at home Friday (Oct. 18).
