Viking quarterback Jackson Stratton, wearing a sling for his right arm, walked onto the Mater Dei Catholic campus Friday night, Sept. 18.

Stratton, answering questions, said, "I broke my scapula," pointing to the back of his right shoulder. The prognosis? "Four weeks," he said. "Does that include rehab?" "Yes," said the senior All-CIF QB.

Which sounds like the optimistic view. Stratton showed me a video of the first play from scrimmage on his phone that the La Jolla offense ran against Del Norte Fri., Sept. 11. "I wrote out the plays your team ran.," I insisted, opening the page in my notebook to that game's script. "The best I could figure, you ran a keeper on the sixth play."

"No," he answered. "Del Norte's offense," pointing to different videos. "Then La Jolla, first play on offense." He ran a keeper which I had missed right at the start as I moved down the sidelines during the game, not writing it.

Kevin Steel in warm-ups.

After a decent gain running straight up the middle--20 yards?--he was tackled and the ensuing break occurred.

He continued with some effectiveness, but through the first half the shoulder stiffened up and Stratton remained on the sidelines after halftime. La Jolla lost, 38-15.

La Jolla, with head coach Tyler Roach's ingenuity as offensive coordinator, opened the game at Mater Dei Catholic with Makai Smith at wildcat. Kevin Steel then lined up at the traditional quarterback spot for the replay of first down after a penalty.

Justin Scully, who played QB in the second half against Del Norte--pretty effectively considering zero time practicing at the position this summer and fall--remained at running back against the Crusaders. (See game story.)
