La Jolla won a thriller at Mater Dei Catholic, 7-6, Wed., March 31 to complete three wins in three days of the annual Lions Tournament and move into a playoff with Maranatha Christian Thurs., April 1--and it wasn't for April Fools.

Coach Gary Frank's 2021 Viking squad, now sporting a 5-1 record to start its first projected complete season in two years, took care of crosstown rival Bishop's Tues., March 30 as senior lefty Owen McNally mixed curves with his fastball to fashion a three-hitter over host Coach Kirk McKaskill's team at the latter's Kate Sessions Elementary School home field off Soledad Mountain Road in La Jolla.

McKaskill, a 12-year major League pitcher who won 106 games for the Angels and White Sox and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, said before the game he is trying to "replicate" what he built during seven years as head coach at Torrey Pines High.
