Senior Devin Brown, an outfielder for La Jolla who hit .293 in 69 at bats last year, says, "The leadership is obviously going to be more focused," referring to 11 seniors on a squad of 21 players.

"We're definitely going to go harder," the left-handed thrower said. He's projected to also pitch some for Coach Gary Frank's Vikings, as he was one of nine hurlers to take their turn on the mound against the alumni in a nine-inning tilt Feb. 15.

Last year's edition was 14-13 overall, 5-7 in league. This year looks to be much better.

The tentative starting lineup at this point, with two days to go before the season opener at home against Oceanside in the Pirate Baseball Classic, looks like Cooper McNally at third base, Noah  Brown at shortstop, Jake Klimkiewicz at second, and Luke Brunette at first, with Jack Liebesman catching.

Frank said Wed., Feb. 18, that Connor Hobbs looks to be his centerfielder. Besides Devin Brown, in the corners in the outfield Johnny Meyerott and Calvin Hyytinen figure to jump in.

"We (seniors) care about everyone. We want to instill respect, too," said Meyerott, catching his breath from a drop-dead abdominal workout with Hyytinen just behind the infield apron later in practice Wed., Feb. 19.

Cooper McNally, who will start at the hot corner,
says, "Playing shortstop is fun. But I'll probably
play third base in college."

Chimed in Hyytinen, a captain on the Viking soccer team, "We have a great group of guys. We've played together a lot."

Meyerott said to  "Kid Hyyte", "Hey, keep on me to do these workouts. I can get kind of lazy." Calvin said he would.

Johnny, who played left field last year before breaking his hand in midseason, also said, "There's a lot of competition on this team. But it's a friendly competition. Because you know if don't work hard, you're going to lose your spot."
