La Jolla's softball team squashed visiting Madison, 9-5, behind the pitching of freshman Abby Espinoza in an Eastern League game Mon., April 9.

Espinoza normally starts in left field for Coach Andrea Denham's team. But with starting pitcher Kyra Ferenczy having played in a soccer tournament over the weekend, the switch was made--putting Ferenczy in her club/travel team position, the outfield--for Monday's game.

The Vikings led 9-1 late in the game, after breaking open a 1-1 game in the fourth inning. The Warhawks rallied with four runs to close the game out by the final four-run margin.

La Jolla shortstop Josie Sinkeldam, who has started for four years, is beginning her march on various school records. In the win over Madison, she reached milestones of her 100th game played and her 150th hit, according to team statistician Gary Sinkeldam, her father.

The slick-fielding shortstop, who bats leadoff in Denham's lineup, celebrated the milestone game by back-handing a grounder hit deep into the hole between shortstop and third base, and throwing the batter out.

The Vikings play three games this week, another reason for Espinoza's being in the pitching circle against the Warhawks in place of Ferenczy. La Jolla plays host to Morse, whose assistant coach is former LJHS assistant Tracy Brown, Tues., April 10.
