There were a lot of bright spots Wednesday evening, Dec. 4, as La Jolla narrowly fell to host UC, 36-34: returners Stanley Vishnevskiy (138 pounds) and Liam Kressin (144) pinned their opponents, leading up to Jayden Williams' dominating three-period, 14-2 defeat of his 175-pound Centurion opponent to cap the night's festivities.

Plus veterans on the girls side shined: varsity captain Matisse Pickett (125), a four-year wrestler, and teammate Maddie Quach (weighing 105, third year) both set their foes' shoulders to the mat for the required three seconds for pins in their portion of the evening.

Williams' grueling display of endurance, lasting all three two-minute periods, consisted of four takedowns by the Viking star and one escape. This season, for the first time, three points are awarded for a takedown, rather than the previous two, in high school wrestling. The NCAA has had this rule for four years.

Regarding his present weight, before the bout Jayden said, "The scales here (at UCHS) had me higher (in weight). At La Jolla, I was underweight." He was recorded at 165.5 pounds.

The evening's matchup marked La Jolla's first dual meet outing of the 2024-25 season, after many of the Viking wrestlers competed in the Rancho Bernardo Takedown Tournament a week ago.
