La Jolla ran its season-opening streak of wins to eight Tuesday night, Dec. 3, with a 58-52 win over visiting San Pasqual on the characteristic scoring exploits of junior guards Brody Sessa and Leo Hawkinson.

The Eagles narrowed the gap to four points at 56-52 with 10 seconds left in the game, but the Vikings held on to win, aided by Sessa's pair of free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining.

Coach Paul Baranowski's squad, the only La Jolla team in at least two decades to begin a season this well, led by as many as 10 points in the first half, with two minutes left on Hawkinson's two-pointer from the left elbow extended.

The Vikes built a bigger lead of 13 in the second half, the latest with 4:38 left in the game at 48-35. But that margin quickly dwindled.

Said Jeremy Cromwell, a reserve guard, "We need to play better in the first half," when asked what his undefeated team could do to perform better.

The 6-footer hit a three from the left side near the baseline with 43 seconds on the clock to secure a 10-point lead. "It felt good," Cromwell said. "But Coach (Baranowski) wasn't too happy. He said only layups and free throws (in the final minute)."
