Between the 7:19 mark early in the fourth quarter to 4:31, La Jolla scored nine straight points to once again separate themselves from visiting Point Loma 55-46, on their way to an exciting 62-54 win at home Tues., Nov. 23, during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Earlier, Coach Paul Baranowski's 2021-22 edition held a 26-17 lead over the Pointers with 4:00 left in the second quarter. The Vikings were led by senior guard Max Raulston, with spectacular shake-and-bake one-on-one moves to the basket, and a team defense that stymied Point Loma during the first half.
The nine-point advantage in the second period dissipated through the third until Point Loma knotted the score 42-all, then 46-all early in the final stanza as the visitors recovered some touch for the basketball.
At the outset of the afternoon game--moved to La Jolla due to Point Loma's campus construction over the break, with electricity being out--the Vikings built a 17-3 lead, then 19-9 before a delighted home crowd that featured some basketball alumni coming back home from college. Diego and Gabe Solis were present, as were Charlie Gal and others.
With shooting guard Brennan Ross canning four straight free throws in crunch time, and big men Dylan Posey and Richard Yoon providing some muscle underneath, La Jolla took home its second victory against one loss in the young season. What a relief and delight to watch live basketball in person after the peak of COVID last year.
