LJ g XC: Vikings place 15th at state

By Ed Piper

La Jolla's girl athletes placed 15th at the state cross country meet in Fresno Sat., Nov. 27, a remarkable finish and a portent of more promising things to come in the next two years.

Running on a course stretching 5,000 meters (the metric equivalent of three miles) at Woodward Park, the traditional site for the state meet, Viking Kirra Fisk took 27th place in 19:03.3 and teammate Daphne Mayer 60th in 19:45.8. Both are sophomores. Look out in the Spring for track and next year in cross country.

Junior Scarlett Slagter placed 120th (20:58.6), freshman Chloe Lund 131st (21:12.5), and senior Natalie Courtney 140th (21:25.4).

LJ FB: Game recap 11/26

By Ed Piper

Two championship games two years in a row--that's a thought to carry away from Friday's rough loss, Nov. 26, at Escondido High in the CIF D2 championship game.

Granted, La Jolla couldn't get their offense moving in this latest adventure. But Coach Tyler Roach has had the imagination, staff, and dedication to return the Vikings to the next title tilt held after 2019's glorious D3 Section title and Southern California Regional championship. Plus, if there had been a playoff last Spring, La Jolla went 5-0 and was playing extremely well in the abbreviated COVID-restricted mini-season.

La Jolla took a logical gamble against Scripps Ranch Friday, starting Jackson Stratton at quarterback after he tweaked his right shoulder (the source of his injury back in game 3 of the 2021 season) two games ago. Things didn't work out, for whatever reason. Then Roach substituted Kevin Steel, super sub of the year, but by then it was too late and things played out to the 42-0 loss at the hands of the Falcons.

From the beginning, Scripps had the momentum, blowing to a 7-0 first quarter lead, then 28-0 at halftime as the game began to get away from La Jolla.

All 6'6" Falcon quarterback Jax Leatherwood had to do through three quarters was hand the ball off to hard-working and effective running back Jalen Shaw, not big at 170 pounds but determined, and throw the occasional pass.

Shaw carried the ball four times and was the target of an attempted pass in Scripps' first possession to open the game. When Jalen rushed at least five more times in his team's second possession and caught a Leatherwood pass, the designated home team led 7-0 with 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

All credit has to be given to Coach Marlon Gardinera's defense, as well, in making things so frustrating for La Jolla. Gardinera led the "Let Them Play" movement during the height of COVID last year when all school sports were shut down. The movement is credited with breaking some of the logjam to enable athletes to hold abbreviated seasons in winter and spring 2021.

The second period determined the direction of the game, with Scripps scoring TD's with 6:13, 2:27, and :45 on the clock, the first two again on rushes by Shaw, the last an unfortunate result (from LJ's view) of Stratton's forced end-over-end pass. The Falcons assumed a commanding 28-0 lead, thereby killing some media members' desire to continue braving the chilly cold of Escondido to continue covering the game (not mine).

The game stats show Jackson Stratton just wasn't right. He only threw 7 passes, completing 3. That's not a normal Stratton stat, he of prolific throwing and yardage completed. He threw 2 interceptions, and had a total of 26 yards in the air.

Steel, in a difficult position to be inserted late and try to generate something with the offense, completed 11 of 17 for 85 yards.

A person on the sideline asked, Should Jackson have started, considering the injury and circumstances? Should Kevin have started, with Scripps Ranch playing determined defense? It's all difficult to play "what if?" and predict what could have happened.

For the Falcons, Shaw rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Leatherwood completed 14 passes for 178 yards.

Between the 7:19 mark early in the fourth quarter to 4:31, La Jolla scored nine straight points to once again separate themselves from visiting Point Loma 55-46, on their way to an exciting 62-54 win at home Tues., Nov. 23, during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Earlier, Coach Paul Baranowski's 2021-22 edition held a 26-17 lead over the Pointers with 4:00 left in the second quarter. The Vikings were led by senior guard Max Raulston, with spectacular shake-and-bake one-on-one moves to the basket, and a team defense that stymied Point Loma during the first half.

The nine-point advantage in the second period dissipated through the third until Point Loma knotted the score 42-all, then 46-all early in the final stanza as the visitors recovered some touch for the basketball.

At the outset of the afternoon game--moved to La Jolla due to Point Loma's campus construction over the break, with electricity being out--the Vikings built a 17-3 lead, then 19-9 before a delighted home crowd that featured some basketball alumni coming back home from college. Diego and Gabe Solis were present, as were Charlie Gal and others.

With shooting guard Brennan Ross canning four straight free throws in crunch time, and big men Dylan Posey and Richard Yoon providing some muscle underneath, La Jolla took home its second victory against one loss in the young season. What a relief and delight to watch live basketball in person after the peak of COVID last year.

The La Jolla High girls cross country team ran second at the CIF Section meet Sat., Nov. 20, with 50 points. They were runners-up in Division IV to Sage Creek, which finished with 22 team points.

Sophomore Kirra Fisk placed second individually, running 18:17.5 behind Stormy Wallace of Sage Creek, who finished the 2.96-mile course at Morley Field in Balboa Park in 17:20.9. Wallace is a senior.

Fellow sophomore Daphne Mayer finished fifth in 19:10.9, another outstanding performance for the Viking entrant.

La Jolla as a team finished 2-5-11-19-21 to accumulate their 50 team points. Junior Scarlett Slagter ran a time of 20:18.1. Freshman Chloe Lund, another young and promising star, was clocked in 20:49.5. Senior Sasha Backus was 21st in 20:56.6.

Kevin Steel is developing into a skilled starting quarterback right before our very eyes.

Steel, employed as the back-up QB to the injured Jackson Stratton, delivered a resounding performance as he led La Jolla to a convincing 27-14 victory over host Mira Mesa in the CIF Division 2 semifinals Fri., Nov. 19.

The Vikings, with spectacular play from receiver Mason Powers and running back Justin Scully, and key plays from Spence Carswell, built  a 17-7 halftime lead against an opponent who was favored. Steel found Powers for a touchdown strike with 2:58 left in the first quarter, following a 30-yard Spence Carswell field goal.

Then the blossoming QB in his own right drilled Scully with a 27-yard completion for a surprising 17-0 advantage with 9:44 remaining in the second quarter.

The Marauders didn't do anything to help their cause. A fumbled reception of La Jolla's kickoff after Carswell's field goal led to Powers' touchdown. The fumble also set the tone for Mira Mesa's non-attack.

Mira Mesa's energy visibly sagged. The program had dedicated the season to Coach Chris Thompson, who died from COVID symptoms while battling bone cancer after the second game this fall. Following the poor start Friday, the Marauders couldn't conjure the emotion to activate their offense. The home crowd, treated to a halftime show by their huge marching band, fell silent other than for the show.

LJHS players and cheerleaders sang their hearts out
on the Alma Mater with the Viking crowd
after the 27-14 playoff win.

Steel, who looked more and more comfortable dropping back--he was building on the three games he started at midseason after Stratton's initial scapula fracture--added to Carswell's second field goal with another TD aerial to Powers with 3:33 left in the third quarter. Spence made the interception that gave La Jolla the ball back. The score was 27-7.

When the 6'4" Kevin misfired on a pass intercepted beginning the fourth quarter, leading to a Mira Mesa TD for 27-14, LJHS Coach Tyler Roach shut the air game down. That's when Scully especially shined, taking handoffs from Steel to protect the ball and use up the clock.

When Powers, doing double duty on defense, intercepted Marauder QB Tyson Line's pass with 4:03 remaining in the game, that clinched Mira Mesa's doom. After the Vikings gained a first down with under 2:30 left, nailing down the victory, Roach took off his headphones and turned to the La Jolla crowd to celebrate.

La Jolla faces Scripps Ranch in the D2 championship game Fri., Nov. 26, at Escondido High at 7 p.m.

Running back Justin Scully was the bomb
in carrying the ball for the victorious Vikings.
