Sophomore Emmy Cardenas, playing centerfield, blasted a home run into the centerfield flag stand early in the game and La Jolla downed visiting San Dieguito Academy, 7-4, in a rematch of their earlier playoff encounter June 9. This one, played Tues., June 15, sends the Vikings to a CIF Division 4 playoff game reportedly in Holtville Thurs., June 17.
However, at present Holtville is sweltering under normal seasonal temperatures up to 118 degrees, so discussion at Tuesday's playoff game (in mild La Jolla) had to do with what hour to set game time in view of the unbearable daytime temperatures facing a visiting opponent in that locale.
La Jolla started second-string pitcher Abby Espinoza in the circle. Head coach Andrea Denham had to be pleased with her team's performance behind Espinoza.
Holtville has yet to suffer a loss in the Division 4 playoffs, so a victory over them Thursday would require another game Friday.
