In some ways, Carlos Fletes, SDA's head baseball coach, sounds like the coach of a league champion. He's not haughty, very down-to-earth, but there's a confidence.
San Dieguito Academy faces Brawley at home Tues., June 8, at 3:30 p.m. in a play-in game for the CIF tournament. The winner of that contest faces La Jolla at Muirlands Middle School Wed., June 9.
"We feel good about our chances," said Fletes by phone Tuesday morning. Let's say confident but not cocky.
"I'm throwing my ace today (against the Wildcats). His name is Kadin Muckley. He's a righthander."
Fletes has total respect for La Jolla, Wednesday's potential opponent: "Gavin (Graff) no-hit us (in the two teams' match-up April 6). Our guy matched him pretty well. One hit.
"There was one error. It was a real good game. What you want in high school baseball except for the error.
"Kudos to (Gavin) on all his (achievements) and his playing next year." (I told him that Graff had informed me he was going to enroll and play at Adelphi University in New Jersey in the fall.)
