Zeke Pearl, at 132 pounds, pinned two opponents and beat a total of four wrestlers on his way to earning fourth place in the San Pasqual JV Invitational Tournament Sat., Dec. 14, at San Pasqual High School.
The sophomore, leading the way for seven Viking teammates, pinned Arleigh Burnham of Grossmont in 1:43 right out of the chute in the opening round in early-morning competition.
"In the first period, I had a headlock crunch (against Burnham), but I didn't do it right, so I got two points for the takedown," explained Pearl after his initial match.
"In the second period, I was (in) down (position), so I was on the bottom. I escaped, so I got the point (for that).
"I had a half (Nelson) and a turk." (Assistant coach Kraig Feldman translated: A turk is a maneuver in which he lifts the opponent's leg.)
It worked, and Pearl pinned his man in a minute, 43 seconds.
Zeke also pinned Caelon Craig of Patrick Henry in 3:19 in Consolation Round 3, after beating Michael Holter of University City 10-2 in Consolation Round 2.
Pearl's other victory came with a major decision, 18-6, over Santiago Guerrero of St. Augustine in the Consolation Semifinal, before losing in the third place match to finish the day. In all, the sophomore had four wins and two losses, a very good day.
Viking teammates who had wins included Jack Rooney, 106 pounds; Edwin Feinberg, 113; Caden Kestler, 120; Alex von Mueller, 138; and Javier Najera, 220.
Also participating from La Jolla were Charles Long, 126; Jesus Valeriano, 145; and Ben Kasendorf, 152.
