LJ wrestling: Buzzy, Keegan in El Cajon Invitational

By Ed Piper

Sophomore Buzzy Bomberger, at 126 pounds, defeated two opponents on the first day of the El Cajon Invitational Fri., Dec. 13.

Bomberger, who placed third in the Division 4 finals last year at 115 pounds in his initial year competing in high school wrestling, pinned Daniel Johnson of Mission Hills in a quick 2:47 in the third round Friday.

That followed a win by technical fall, by 15-0, over Santiago Guerrero of St. Augustine in the second round. Buzzy, whose formal name is Daniel, had a bye in the opening round.

Friday the 13th wasn't unlucky for Bomberger.

Meanwhile, teammate Keegan Leonard, a junior at 138 yards, pinned Desiderio Sanchez of Sweetwater in 45 seconds in the second round.

Leonard placed sixth last year in the Division 4 finals at 134 pounds.

Keegan then lost by technical fall to Jose Landin of Frontier, 16-1, in round three and to Caleb Holland of Mount Carmel, 15-0, in the fourth round.

The El Cajon Invitational, in its 49th year, is a major tournament attracting wrestlers from Southern California and Arizona. Crater High travels from Oregon. Moses Lake High participates from as far away as Washington state. The meet is held at San Ysidro High. Wrestling in the latter rounds continues Sat., Dec. 14.

Bomberger, whose father Mike is a second-year assistant coach at La Jolla, continued his development and progress in the sport. Contributing to that is the coaching of Isaac Pumajero of Puma Wrestling, who now plays a major role in leading workouts for Viking wrestling.

Mike Bomberger's support has been a major reason for Pumajero's participation beginning this year on the La Jolla coaching staff, according to Head Coach Kellen Delaney.
