La Jolla High's lacrosse programs have a stellar quality--not just in the respective girls' and boys' teams' success of late, but in goal.
Both Ari Conboy, the Vikings girls' sophomore goalkeeper, and senior Morgan "Mogie" Watson, on the boys' side, were just named to the All-CIF First Teams.
Conboy, we already know about. The sophomore took a detour, driving from the Golden Triangle south to National City after mapping "San Diego Academy" into her phone, then having to speed to the championship game against Scripps Ranch at San Dieguito Academy in the other direction.
She got there on time, and played a vital role despite her squad's eventual downfall to the Falcons.
"Mogie"--I didn't even know his given first name. Since he appeared on the LJHS pitch three years ago, manning the net, he became an institution.
Teammates called out "Mogie" during games, especially after his many deft, well-time saves.
Watson had to wait for the Vikings' elite success the last two years, part of the development of the boys' program from good to great.
Ari stepped right into a top, winning contingent from the start. But that can involve even more pressure, because she was put into the starting goal position as a young underclassman. There wasn't a lot of room for error.
And error she didn't allow.
Congratulations to both All-CIF honorees, along with senior Reagan Jetter on the girls' side, also on the First Team, and senior Cavan Walsh, a Second Teamer for the boys. Also, a salute to all the coaches who diligently worked to develop these fine student athletes.
