Senior Gabe Solis, in the closeout to his high school athletic career, said goodbye to a shortened basketball season and welcomed the La Jolla track season by sprinting to an 1.63-second finish in the 100-meter dash in a dual meet at Hoover High Feb. 28.
Solis, who has always exhibited good natural speed, placed third behind two Cardinal runners, and ahead of teammates Jackson Scherrer, Ethan Trinh, and Philip Kovelman-Ottilie, who finished fifth, sixth, and seventh.
On the opposite side, Viking girls dominated the 100-meter event: Zoe Guidry, Lily Grunski, and Ebony Crandle broke the laser beam all within .18 of a second. Hoover had no one to send onto the track in opposition.
Solis came right back in the 200-meter to place second in 23.79 seconds (wind-aided)
This time, Kovelman-Ottilie, a freshman, pulled up in eighth place. Trinh placed seventh, while Mason Powers took sixth.
Grunski, a sophomore, won the long jump and triple jump, leaping 16'0.5 inches and 32'5", respectively.
