Junior right-hander Koa Scott has a 3-1 win-loss record in four starts for La Jolla High's baseball team through its first 10 games, holding opposing batters to a .174 batting average across 25 innings.
The 6'3" athlete, a returner on Coach Gary Frank's squad, holds a 1.40 earned run average. He has hurled two complete seven-inning games, including a shutout.
He has half the Vikings' wins so far in 2019.
Scott, bearing a Hawaiian first name due to his father's interest in that culture, has struck out 18 while walking only four. He has thrown 304 pitches, far ahead of sophomore Gavin Graff's 231 for second behind him.
Said Frank of his ace:
"Koa is a great kid, and an exemplary student athlete. He
maintains a GPA over 4.0, and is one of the hardest workers on the field. His hard work has paid off, as he has shown marked improvement in all aspects
of his game.
"Last year, as a 10th-grader on varsity, he took some lumps, but never stopped competing. He learned a lot from the experience he gained last year, and he has put those lessons to good use throughout the early portion of our season. He is much more poised and composed on the mound, and the rest of the team is feeding off his high level of confidence.
"He has shown great command of all three of his pitches, and has done a great job of keeping the opposing hitters off-balance through his first four starts. He has also shown big improvements with the bat this year. After being held hitless as a sophomore, he already has three hits and two doubles this season.
"Koa has a great, competitive mindset, and he will only continue to get better as time goes on."
