Tahseen Hussain, wrestling at 128 pounds for La Jolla, went into overtime against Cathedral's Jeffrey Johnson after the two knotted on points in regulation, 4-4.
Hussain, a likeable and popular member of Coach Kellen Delaney's team, was visibly breathing hard after grappling with his equally-matched opponent for three grueling two-minute periods, setting up for the overtime faceoff.
"I was confused," said Tahseen after the match. "I don't know all the rules, but I didn't understand why the referee didn't give me points when I first took him (Johnson) down. He (the referee) waited until I turned him."
Entering the one-minute overtime with the score tied, the first points by either wrestler would immediately terminate the match.
Hussain, a sophomore, was finally credited with a takedown and two points for the 6-4 win. The decision gave La Jolla three team points, for a commanding 21-0 over the visiting Dons after only four bouts.
Prior to Tahseen's win, the Vikings benefited from an overtime pin by 120-pounder Zeke Pearl with 48.4 seconds gone in the extra stanza. His victim was Nick Rodriguez of Cathedral. The two entered overtime tied 7-7.
Then, after Hussain's decision, in the La Jolla blitz of three straight lower-weight bouts, the Vikings' Keegan Roberts had his hand raised in triumph after he pinned the Dons' Nico Salmeri at 132 pounds with 0.5 seconds left in the second period.
The hosts led 27-0 at that point. La Jolla went on to post a 49-20 Western League dual meet win.
