Calvin Hytinnen supplied two blasts and freshman Spencer Carswell added a third as La Jolla, ranked sixth in CIF Division 2 soccer, upset number-one Hoover by taking a commanding 3-1 first half lead, then cruising to a 4-2 Eastern League win on the Edwards Stadium turf Thursday evening, Jan. 24.
"We've been getting good leadership, and the team has been playing well," said Viking assistant coach Victor Zendejas before the match, which La Jolla saw as crucial after a league loss to San Diego earlier in the week.
Goalie Kevin Mojica made some outstanding saves in the opening half, as he was fronted by a defense that bent but didn't break in only giving up an early goal to the highly-ranked Cardinals.
Hytinnen's pair of goals came after Hoover took a 1-0 lead on a cold night in La Jolla. Carswell was serenaded by chants of "He's a freshman" after netting his goal in compensation time just before the whistle closing the first half.
La Jolla, under head coach Marcos Gonzales, is 8-4-3 overall, 4-1-1 in the Eastern League. Hoover is 14-7-3 overall, 2-4-0 in league.
The Vikings were playing without junior captain Caleb Saul. Their other captain, senior Nick Goehler, was active and in the lineup from his spot at center back on the defensive end.
