La Jolla scratched back from a five-goal deficit at the end of the first quarter, but could not fully overcome Grossmont's momentum and fell 15-12 in the quarterfinals of the CIF Open Division playoffs at Coggan Pool Thurs., Nov. 1, ending the Vikings' section playoffs hopes.
Coach Tom Atwell's squad, seeded third in the elite division, quickly fell behind with starting goalie Cole Raulston on the bench, a 4-2 deficit soon becoming 8-4.
But with Raulston, an All-CIF goalie last year as a junior, being reinserted into the lineup in the third quarter after paying his penance, La Jolla came back from being down 9-6 to knot the score at 10-all early in the final quarter on Pablo Rayon's goal.
Fellow All-CIF'er, and All-American Cole Atwell scored his eighth goal with 2:27 left, but it was not enough after the Hillers reeled off five straight goals to take a commanding five-goal lead.
Viking Leo Braga added his second goal with 1:44 remaining. But after a late La Jolla steal to put the Grossmont lead in doubt, the Hiller defense stole the ball back with 40 seconds left, sealing the outcome.
Raulston made seven saves in the third quarter after his insertion. He accumulated a total of nine saves in his one half of play.
