A minor revelation in La Jolla's effort against El Capitan in the Grossmont summer basketball league Fri., June 15, was a 6'3" newcomer sporting a nice shot.
Christian Gamboa, a rising sophomore, wasn't hesitant in shooting from the outside for Coach Paul Baranowski's Vikings as the two relatively young teams battled it out in the Hiller gym as fans above the floor circulated cool air in the often-steamy gym.
The tall, well-proportioned athlete played last year for junior varsity coach Hugh Demiral, who knows a thing or two about being a big man who can shoot (the Euro League veteran played both outside and inside during his career, and stands 6'9").
Gamboa looked comfortable and in the right place as he filled a role in Baranowski's second platoon against the Vaqueros. He has good form on his jump shot, and he showed he's knowledgeable in moving in the Viking offensive and defensive systems.

Meanwhile, Demiral, his former coach, was tutoring next year's freshman and JV prospects in a game down the walkway in the Old Gym on the Grossmont High campus. "Watch Iceland in the World Cup tomorrow morning," advised the Turkish coach, also a soccer enthusiast, it would seem, to a visitor.
