La Jolla's boys basketball team is ranked sixth in the latest media poll for San Diego.
The move up from number nine to six comes on the heels of the Vikings' 69-66 win over Torrey Pines in the closing seconds a week ago in the Grossmont Invitational.
At the time, when Coach Paul Baranowski was informed his team was ranked sixth, his comment was, "That's why I don't read the papers. We're still working on (the basics of) playing together. Have any of the voters (even) seen us play?"
Torrey Pines remained at number three despite the upset loss, in which Viking guard Reed Farley scored 38 points. Farley was 8 for 15 from the three-point line, and 8 for 8 at the free throw line.
La Jolla (10-1) returned to practice Mon., Jan. 2, after a nine-day layoff following the Grossmont Invitational, which the Vikings closed out with a big win over a weak Valley Center team.
The Vikings travel to Carlsbad Wed., Jan. 4, for a nonleague tuneup before starting Eastern League action Fri., Jan. 6, at home.
It will be the Vikings' entry into the newly-aligned league, following decades playing in the Western League. The change comes with the reconfiguration of conferences along power rankings, rather than the traditional method of school enrollment size. The goal is "equity", or equal competition. Leagues will then be readjusted every two years or so. Other sports are following the same path.
