La Jolla's girls water polo team downed visiting Cathedral Catholic, 12-8, in the two teams' Western League opener Mon., Jan. 5. The Vikings opened up a three-point lead for the first time early in the fourth quarter on Avi Cavaiola's shot from the "one" position (on the left of the goal), after a seesaw battle the whole way.

La Jolla basically rotated scoring through the four quarters, with three players sharing goals in the first quarter, junior Avery Edstrom owning the second, Astrid Egan with dual goals in the third period, and Clara Siddons and Cavaiola in the fourth. Coach Tom Atwell said before the game that his team needs to "distribute scoring" more in the New Year.

Don center Francesca "Frankie" McNeil was prominent in the middle. Cathedral coach Jacob Pril acknowledged after the game, "Frankie takes up a lot of room" in the center.
