In a return to the annual Marauder Invitational at Mira Mesa, Viking 145-pounder Charles Long pinned three straight opponents before losing a narrow 11-8 decision to Christophe Alvarez of Central High (El Centro) in the tournament semifinals.

Long, a junior, didn't wrestle last Spring as he opted to play baseball when several different sports had their seasons run concurrently after COVID restrictions were lifted in February. But he came back with some fire at the Mira Mesa wrestling event Sat., Dec. 11.

He participated in the Marauder competition with four teammates--senior Jesus Valeriano (160 pounds), sophomore Sebastian Rivera (113 pounds), junior Daniel Pena (138), and senior Calvin Worst (170)--in the all-day event.

Rivera reached the third round in the 113-pound weight division. Worst lost in the quarterfinals at 170 pounds in his first high school tournament ever.

In Worst's match with Malik Benmoussa of Canyon Hills, Calvin pinned his opponent 54 seconds into the third period.
