Senior Max Smith had another jarring (for opponents) performance at running back Fri., March 26 against visiting Mira Mesa, whom the Vikings squashed, 51-14--allowing no points to the young Marauders in the second half.
The linebacker-moonlighting-as-a-running-back rushed for over 104 yards (in incomplete statistics) and two touchdowns. He often used his body and head as a battering ram to frighten and scatter the inexperienced Mira Mesa defenders as he carried the ball over 13 times on the ground.
It must be scary to have to face the 5'8", 215-pound back when he is charging full-bore toward you.
Smith is the one who inspires all the others, said Mira Mesa head coach Chris Thompson before the game. He is the one who gets his Viking teammates going. He is the straw that stirs the drink, in Reggie Jackson's words.
La Jolla played unevenly in the first half, having to deal with traditional Senior Night jitters, sitting tied with Mira Mesa 14-14 shortly before halftime. Then junior quarterback Jackson Stratton, senior all-purpose receiver Diego Solis, and others got their focus back and used the second half as a wiping up of the remains of the Marauders on their way to the 37-point wipeout.
It was the second straight week in which the Vikings--2-0 in the five-game COVID-limited season--stunned their opponents, last week surprising Morse and star running back Byron Cardwell with a brutal 47-14 defeat on the Tigers' home turf in South San Diego.
