Kate Hartford, a four-year varsity field hockey player, recently received an appointment to West Point beginning this summer.
"I wanted to serve," said the earnest La Jolla High senior during the Vikings' swim meet against Valhalla Tues., March 10, at Coggan Pool. "I thought serving my country would be the best way."
Adding to the gravity of the appointment is the fact Hartford's father and maternal grandfather also went to West Point.
"I graduate June 9, then I start training at West Point June 29," related Hartford, between events in the swim meet on a cold, wet afternoon when the rains had subsided. "A big 20 days in between."
She'll be dealing with living in the snow of New York for the first time this coming winter. She said she has visited the academy's campus.
Hr nomination was carried forward by Scott Peters, Congressman representing the 52nd district.
Hartford was a leader on a Viking field hockey squad in a cohort that played under more than one varsity coach. But under Coach Amanda Combs Warford in the past three years, La Jolla has reached levels of success never before achieved in the program.
Hartford competed in the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyle in the meet against Valhalla.
