After falling behind 14-6 to Mission Vista, La Jolla's summer varsity team reeled off 14 unanswered points in the annual Canyon Crest Academy basketball event.
The Vikings, led by the returning trio of juniors Diego Solis and Christian Gamboa and sophomore Max Raulston, continued their surge well into the second half, eventually prevailing 53-38 Fri., July 5.
Utilizing a formula that has prevailed during Coach Paul Baranowski's six years at the helm, La Jolla applied guard pressure in a team-oriented approach on both defense and offense. Lacking a big man, as is their custom, the Vikings instead pushed the pace and capitalized on steals and forced turnovers by the Wolves.
At the outset, returning Mission Vista junior Ty Cox and his cohort took command of the contest, played at the public high school right off Highway 56 near Del Mar.
Then the superior depth of La Jolla became apparent, as the core of Solis, Gamboa, and Raulston, augmented by newcomers Brennan Ross, Ryan Lancaster, Cole Black and others, tore by the outmanned Wolves for repeated baskets.
The 6'2" Gamboa's three-pointer with 10:15 left in the second half (with two 20-minute running halves) upped the score to 41-27. The bulge eventually approached 20 points, as Baranowski rotated in Black, a 6'3" junior, Lancaster, a 5'8" sophomore, and others.
Ross, who canned several treys in a win in the UCSD Team Camp the week before, once again was in the starting lineup to contribute his long-range shooting. He was quiet for much of Friday's contest, however.
