Tyler Buchner is kind of the spoken secret around passing league action this summer.
Buchner, only a sophomore, measures 6'2", 200 pounds, according to information on 247sports.com. He is coached by Joel Allen at Bishop's School.
"He has already been recruited by Alabama and a host of other schools," said Andy Koczon, assistant athletic director at Bishop's, a couple of months ago. I sat on the story, because I focus my blog mainly on La Jolla High sports, though I do write pieces for the La Jolla Village News on other local schools (Country Day, University City, as well as Bishop's and La Jolla High).
"You go to some of these camps, and the talent is way up there," reported Bruce Phelan, father of La Jolla High presumed starting quarterback Carsten Phelan, at the the Francis Parker 7-on-7 event Thurs., June 28. We touched on Buchner. "6'2"," the elder Phelan said. His own son stands at least that tall, and is participating in various camps this summer.
In fact, right after the Parker games, Bruce was waiting in the car in the private school's parking lot, ready to drive his son to the Bay Area that afternoon and evening for a workout the next day, then back to La Jolla for the 7-on-7 tournament at Edwards Field Sat., June 30.
"I'm going to camps in the Ivy League later this summer," confirmed Carsten Phelan, when I told him I had had a "long talk" with his dad before the Vikings' games at Parker. They will visit Brown, Yale, and other schools and their football camps soon.
"Carsten hasn't played on varsity yet," said Bruce in the earlier chat. "They want to see what's he's like when play actually starts." Carsten sat behind starting quarterback Trevor Scully last season as a junior.
