La Jolla's softball team showed for the second game in a row it can score runs in pairs or bunches, and that it can come back from deficits, but the Vikings (1-1) were edged by host Morse in the second game of the Pacific Beach Classic to start the season, 5-4, in Skyline Thursday afternoon, March 5.
What is remarkable is that LJHS hasn't had these abilities any time recently, going 3-24 last season and similar in previous years.
As they did in their season opener Wednesday, the Vikes fell behind in the first inning, yet came back to lead. This time, though, they couldn't sustain a 3-2 advantage, giving up three runs to the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Nevertheless, there is a new energy among the La Jollans and confidence bolstered by an escalation of arms and bats in the new season. With LJHS trailing 2-0 in the top of the second inning, freshman Emily Alvarez led off the inning with a triple and scored on a double by fellow classman Vanessa Shaffer.
Then, in the third, Katja Sarain opened the inning with a single, and was advanced by Stephanie Alvarez's basehit with one out. Both scored on a three-bagger by Emily Alvarez for a 3-2 lead.
But after yielding three runs to the Tigers in the decisive fifth, La Jolla was only able to cobble together one more run in the seventh after freshman Josie Sinkeldam singled, and the rally fell short.
