LJ b BB: Update, 3 games

I've only been able to attend one of the La Jolla High boys basketball team's first three games, but here's looking at statistics to this early juncture.

Sophomore Reed Farley is bringing the ball down court, setting up the offense, and handling the ball more than anyone else. He leads the team in assists, with 16 in 76 minutes played (96 total minutes played by the team so far in regulation time). Gaynor Blackmon has 8 assists in 70 minutes. Farley also has 11 turnovers, handling the ball so much.

Farley, 6'4" guard in his second year as a starter for Coach Paul Baranowski, is shooting 36 percent from three-point range, with 5 of 14, which is not a bad number.

Forward/wing Owen Porter, only 6'0 or so, is leading the Vikings in rebounds with 18. He has 62 minutes played. When I informed him after our interview (see earlier blog entry, "Gone Fishin'", a well-deserved feature on the senior returner) that he had numerous rebounds in the Vincent Memorial game, his refreshing reaction was, "Really?" He honestly didn't know, and was happy to find out. (Coach B posts the stats.)

Forward Morgan Albers has 14 rebounds, in 70 minutes. Farley has 12, fellow guard Zach Duffy 10 in 46 minutes.

Porter and Albers each have 6 steals. Nice larceny.

Tony Coan and Ladd Castellano are both 3 of 6 from three-point range through early going. We should see more of this from Ladd, especially, because he was unable to play in the opener. His totals are for only two games, whereas the others have played three games.

To have a way at looking at how Baranowski is using players to this point--admittedly on a trial basis to find out where they are--Farley has played 76 minutes, as stated. Albers 70, Porter 62, Coan 51, Parker and Duffy 46, Alex Pitrofsky and Castellano 36, Blackmon 27, Daniel Hemming 18.

Mark Rawdin is injured, as is Grant Miller. Their numbers will break onto the stat page soon. The game against Southwest was a blowout, so everyone played, with starters probably playing less than they might have in a competitive game. The playing rotation, so far, looks like Farley, Albers, Porter, Castellano, Coan, and Parker starting at various times, with Duffy and Blackmon coming off the bench.

Baranowski said before the season that he could see up to 10 of the 13 players on the roster being in the rotation, which would be a nice thing to see. It keeps everybody active, current, experienced under game conditions, and confident that they themselves can deliver. It also keeps morale up.
