As defending South League champs, La Jolla's boys beach volleyball team opens play Sept. 4 at South Mission Beach. Three of the six varsity players return from the 2013 beach champions: senior Austin Jertberg and juniors Jake Northrup and Curran Robertson.
The three new additions to the varsity include two varsity indoor players, seniors Jack Chapman and Alex Krzyz, plus incoming freshman Luke Lentin.
Commented co-head coach Dave Jones, "There is a lot of parity between our top four players--Jack, Austin, Jake, and Curran. In the challenge match Sept. 3 to determine our A and B teams, partners Jack and Austin narrowly defeated Jake and Curran in the two out of three sets, 18-16 in the third!"
This week's line-up shapes up as follows: Chapman and Jertberg on the A team, Northrup and Robertson as B team, and Lentin and Krzyz making up the C pairing.
Chase Blackwell, a sophomore, is a varsity alternate.
Co-coaching with Jones are Michelle Vassiliadis, an assistant to Jones during the indoor season, and Dillon Lesniak, an alumnus of La Jolla High's indoor team.
