Cooper Gilmore, who was named All-CIF last year for her performance in golf, continues to excel as we continue in postseason competition.

Gilmore, only a sophomore with a sparkling resume already, finished day one CIF golf Mon., Oct. 30, tied with two other prep golfers for ninth place among all entrants. She is carrying a 3.08 differential for the 2023 season, equivalent to her handicap over par.

That's better than shooting a 76 every time she goes out. She shot a 74 Monday. The cream comes to the top in elite competition.

On Thurs., Nov. 2, she has a 10:57 a.m. tee time at Torrey Pines North Course for day two, the final day, of San Diego Section playoffs. In her foursome, she is matched with a golfer from Torrey Pines, Cathedral Catholic, and Bishop's. Those are top programs whose teams all made the postseason tournament--Cooper is playing individually, as La Jolla didn't qualify as a team.

LJ g VB 0, El Capitan 3 - CIF quarterfinals

La Jolla's girls volleyball team fell at El Capitan, 3-0, in the CIF Division 1 quarterfinals Sat., Oct. 28, to end their season.

Coach Kelly Drobeck's squad went into CIF as the eighth seed. El Capitan is the top seed.

The Vikings completed the competitive Western League season 4-4 for second place, 13-15 overall.

Senior outside hitter Bradleigh Ryan led the team with 150 kills. Anais Reneuam Lavoie had 77, Talia Zadeyan 68.

Reneuam also had 27 blocks to lead the team, Zadeyan with 21.

Lana Ferrell recorded 101 digs, Ryan 86, Mia Jessen 78. Twelve team members were in double figures in digs, according to statistics on MaxPreps.

Setter Riley Lincoln, a junior, led with 190 assists. Lindsay Laumann had 166. They were far and away the stat leaders in that department for the squad.

In serves received, Ferrell piled up 207, Ryan 178, Paisley Mahn 141, and Jessen 132.

There were flags galore, and in the end, La Jolla won authoritatively, 49-19, Sat., Oct. 28, over a scrappy Christian team playing out the string, going winless in the Eastern League that the Vikings clinched the title for two weeks ago.

But there was no love lost between the two schools, which have a history and a rivalry against each other. As La Jolla coach Tyler Roach said before the game, not mincing words for publication: "I can't stand them."

It became a street fight, with the lopsided score not even playing a role. The Patriots were not about to quit, even having lost two quarterbacks to injury last week. And the Vikings were intent on giving the East County private school a whooping.

The big, bad black-and-red came in with a reputation they've grown accustomed to the last half dozen games, heavily favored and headed for the Division 2 CIF playoffs with a high seed as league champions after the regular slate of games. The usual suspects shone: Jackson Diehl ran for two touchdowns and passed for three more; receiver Nick Sebro made some catches; Wyatt Boczanowski and Sawyer Moseley closed on defense.

And a guy who had never played quarterback before, junior Brady Eads, played the game of his life. He dragged Viking would-be tacklers with him down the field. He had failed to complete the one pass he tried before Saturday.

So he did what he could do best, and that was play with spirit as he ran keeper-after-keeper from the QB position against the bigger La Jollans. In the second half free-for-all, when hardly a play went without a flag being thrown, he even caught a pass from another non-quarterback, Peter Zacharzuk, a wobbly thrower himself, and ran it 54 yards.

Ryan Price is Defensive Coordinator/Associate Head Coach of the La Jolla High football team. He served for six years as head coach at University City High. These comments were made before the Vikings' game at Patrick Henry High Fri., Oct. 20.

Q: Coach Price, who are standouts on defense this year? Who has surprised you?

We knew Ryan Kestler (safety) was going to be good. We didn't know he was going to step up as much as he has been. He has been a big impact player for us this year.

Q: And didn't he have a big play last week (Oct. 13 in a 56-6 win over Morse at home)?

Yeah, he continues to have big plays on defense.

LJ QB Jackson Diehl launches a pass at the end
of the first half. This one went incomplete, but
not too many did as Diehl completed
15 of 18 for 235 yards and 3 TD's. He also
ran for 110 yards on 11 carries, a total of
345 yards.

Receiver Carson Diehl runs for a 30-yard gain
after a reception on first-and-50 from the
La Jolla 30. The pass set up Aidan McGill's
TD run for a 28-7 lead with 2:38 left
in the second quarter.
